The new series kicks off with a six-track gqom EP from Menzi, and a club-focused release from emerging artist Oyisse.
Nyege Nyege Tapes sub-label Hakuna Kulala is launching a new white label series. The club music-focused label – which typically focuses on digital releases – has this week (28 June) announced the first two EPs receiving the vinyl treatment.
Menzi kicks off the series with vinyl edition of his Impazamo EP, which first dropped in April 2020. It will be followed by a new EP entitled Elembo from Congolese, Kampala-based artist Oyisse. The EP marries elements from trap, gqom and regional Central African styles. Authentically Plastic and Makossiri have been confirmed for future releases, though exact details surrounding their projects have yet to be announced. Both Impazamo and Elembo are scheduled for white label release on 27 August.
Nyege Nyege Tapes has also announced the release of De Schuurman‘s debut album, Bubbling Inside. The album takes its name from the Dutch genre bubbling, which originated in Den Haag’s Club Voltage in the late 80s, when people would play dancehall records at 45rpm instead of 33.
